LAME 3.97b2 for Mac OS X

I have compiled lame 3.97b2 for Mac OS X.
Its an universal binary which run on both PowerPC and Intel powered Mac's.

Static build with these optimization lines:
* PowerPC -> "-fast -mcpu=7450 -faltivec -Wall -fno-common -ftree-vectorize"
* Intel -> "-fast -march=i686 -msse3 -mfpmath=sse"

Hope they come to use!

I can make this available via Rarewares, if you wish?

I have downloaded the file indicated...

Sorry, I am NOT command line literate. Your discussions are way above my head.

Could you point me to a thread where I can learn how to Actually install and use the LAME after I've downloaded it?

I want to batch encode 350 mono audio files at 24 kbps to run in Flash.  Is there a batch encoder that works on the Mac?

Other Mac-based encoders I have tried do NOT run in Flash.

Thanks

donelson. Since you're not command line literate I recommend you stay clear of this one.
Cause installing and all use of this lame binary are done in Terminal.

I suggest you try Max instead: http://www.sbooth.org/Max/
Its an audio cd ripper, which also allow you do encode to lots of different audio formats.

That one won't do 24kbps for some reason. Any other ideas?

( You would not believe how many Mac "applications" I have tried. I have spent the last 3 days trying to find one that (a) works and (b) does 24 kbps mono.  Amadeus and Peak Express will do 24 kbps, but their output is not compatible with Flash for some reason. I have installed and uninstalled at least 20 programmes. WHY is this so difficult? )

I am willing to try command-line Terminal stuff, but do not fancy doing 350 of these by hand via Terminal....

I would suggest you to have a look at Applescript to automate this job for you. Applescript will allow you to automate most OS X GUI applications and any terminal commands. Just write a droplet and use "do shell script" to send command to lame. Your other choice would be to install the lame framework for Quicktime and use AS to automate Quicktime.

You can also try Tiger's automator, but I found it to be much less reliable than Applescript (which is already plagued by its inconsistent syntax and behaviours)

That's an interesting idea. Can you point me to a QT instructions page?

I also would like to have a go at Terminal and then AppleScript (if Terminal - Lame produces Flash-compatible 24kbps)

Is there a tutorial on Lame via Terminal?

When I type "Lame" into Terminal, it says Command Not Found...

I have loaded Darwinports and tried "sudo" etc etc. It ran once, then Command sudo not found.

I then tried the Rareware lame.

It ran and I got /Applications/lame -?
ONCE.

Now, command not found.

Jeeezus H Crinkles; what a load of carp.

I have wasted HOURS on this, and all I get is greif.

You guys are no f;ing help at all. What a bunch of tossers.

I beg and beg and you give me crypto baloney. What a bunch of A....

Question, I see the commandline for Intel Mac, but what do I use to actually rip cds with? iTunes-LAME is a PPC iTunes script so it'll make the whole thing slow, and I'm a mac newb... recent convert, pardon the ignorance

Though iTunes-LAME is PPC, there won't be performance problems if the internal encoder application itself is a universal binary, since that will be the one doing the heavy lifting.

Yes, you need the Xcode tools.

Edit: Why don't you just get the precompiled universal binary at rarewares.org? Then the tools are no longer necessary.

Question, is there any way someone can upload the already "modified" stuff for intel mac? It seems like that would be more convenient and time saving rather than grabbing a 700 some odd MB dmg of xcodes just to get started

krmathis, I am reporting success with your lame universal binary for Mac OS X.  In fact, your binary is so good that it encoded all my files in half the time required by the PPC binary.

Yours was a drop-in replacement for the old binary.  It's being used in an app that rips CDs and encodes MP3s in one step (or separately if you have AIFF/WAVs).  If you know it, the icon looks like this:
